Placement Test Suite Aids Math Student Assessment

WATERLOO , Ontario --Feb. 13, 2006--Maplesoft, a provider of software tools for engineering, science and mathematics, has unveiled its Maplesoft-MAA Placement Test Suite. Developed in partnership with the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), the largest professional society that focuses on undergraduate mathematics, the test suite enhances colleges' and universities' ability to assess students' knowledge of math, according to a company announcement.

The product replaces the MAA's paper-based placement tests, which have been used by hundreds of institutions across North America since 1977. The new tests are delivered by a Web-based system, automatically assessing student responses and performance.

“Today's students arrive with a wide range of backgrounds in mathematics,” said John Kenelly, treasurer of the MAA. “The Placement Test Suite helps the MAA provide realistic placement and improved success rates for all students.”

The test suite features six subject tests and four parallel forms of each test. Each test is balanced and tested by the MAA to provide consistent, reliable results. Deploying the tests online enables institutions to avoid logistical headaches. Placement testing can be done before students arrive on campus, and results are available as soon as the student has completed the test. Class scheduling can then be done using the placement information.

Pricing is based on a per student fee and can be as low as $2.00 per student, depending on volume.
