Benchmark Your Learning Organization

OAKLAND , Calif.—March 14, 2006--The Corporate Learning Factbook: Benchmarks and Analysis of U.S. Corporate Learning and Development provides benchmark data, analyzed by industry and company size, that can be used to assess learning organizations.

The 67-page study is based on 1,200 respondents representing a cross section of U.S. company sizes and industries. Readers receive guidance on calculating baseline metrics for their organizations, which can then be compared against benchmark data in the study, the company said. Factbook includes such analysis metrics as budgets, expenditures per learner, cost per student hour, program priorities, budget allocations, staffing sizes, staff-to-learner ratios, staff to total spending, technology usage and budgets, and outsourcing spending.

Key findings include the following:

  • Technology, retail, state and local government, and business services sectors are experiencing the fastest growth in training-related spending.
  • Spending per employee varies widely (from $4,000 in business to $200 in retail), according to industry sector and company size. The average per learner expenditure is $1,412.
  • Learning management system spending is typically 3% to 7% of the total training budget.
  • Adoption of virtual classroom technology is very high in several sectors (technology companies have a 75% adoption rate).
