Open Source Essential, IDC Says
FRAMINGHAM, Mass.—May 1, 2006—Open
source is becoming a fundamental aspect of service portfolios for
major service providers, including IBM Global Services, HP Services
(HPS), Unisys, Novell, and others, according to a recent study from
IDC.
Worldwide Open Source Services 2006 Vendor Analysis: The Open Source Services
Opportunity (IDC #200994) analyzes the open source services competitive
landscape by comparing providers of open source-related services, the
research company said in an announcement. The study also looks at the performance
of these firms in addition to their growth strategies and direction,
and contains an open source services competitive map.
According to the announcement, open source
is moving up on the investment agenda of companies worldwide, as
service providers (mostly service arms of technology companies) have
formalized support, training, and certification services to encourage
adoption of open source (principally Linux) technology on their products.
As open source software goes mainstream, IDC said it finds that service
vendors must further develop open source capabilities to
meet client needs and attract new customers.
